Beginning Your Book

Today is the day to begin writing a new book. I'd like to invite you on a writing journey, to write your book and get it published. Sometimes the hardest part of writing a book is putting words on paper. Begin your book by putting the first word on paper or on your computer screen. Let the thoughts and ideas you have for your book swirl through your mind and find their way to paper. Maybe you'd like to start your book by writing down notes about your book, about where you want your book to go and what you want it to say.

Since I teach writer's workshops and facilitate a writer's group, I always give homework assignments. Your assignment for this month, should you choose to accept it is: Write a ten-page, detailed outline of your book. Come up with tentative chapter titles and group your notes for each chapter under the title. One of the best things about creating an outline is that it gives you a focus and a great place to start letting your words run all over the page, to grow and become a book. Another wonderful part about creating an outline is that you can re-work it into the chapter summaries section of a book proposal.

Please leave me a comment, telling me in general terms about the book you're writing. If you have any questions, please ask, and I'll post a response. Every month, we'll work on another part of writing a book, complete with homework assignments. We'll also be working on putting together a book proposal and getting your book published.

Happy book writing! Let this be the year you write your book and get it published!

Ok I am starting. I have no idea if I am going in the right direction at all. (Jeez...I wrote a thesis, you would think I could write something that I enjoy). I want my book to be a little about my life, my wisdom, my blog and my photography. How I heck can I pull this together!? Agh! Help!

Hey Caroline! I read your post on The Zen In You today. Just let the wind, and the words, take you where they will. Write down whatever comes to you in the way that it comes to you. You already have your start because you know what you want your book to be about. Do you have a title yet? I would suggest that it be "The Zen in You" because your blog covers the things you want your book to be about.

Yes, my title is "Finding The Zen in You." I have a skeleton outline now and building from there. I am writing and writing and figure I can scale back...but I want to get it on paper.

At some point I would love to have you look at it...

And the publishing part...jeez...that is something! Is lulu the best way to self publish? I see you use sterling. I don't want to put the cart in front of the horse...but I want to have a good idea of costs involved...

Thanks again! You are my angel of motivation!

Ooh an assisgnment. I've been working (or rather not working) on a book idea for the last 14 years, but in the last 1 year have zoned in on what I want to say, where there's a need, what I'm passionate about, characters that I can hear, and with a concept that might work. It's a children's book, but what I want to do is mix fiction with food - food fiction? Not a recipe book - they're dull when you're young, but with just a few recipes built around the story. The problem with schools is they're mostly academically focused, so those who are creatively rather than academically centred are finding their needs aren't met - maybe one reason boys struggle at school.

'A detailed outline of your book' though - where do you start with that?
